Curfew Continues On Barrier Islands, Looting Arrests Reported

SEA ISLE, N.J. -

Gov. Chris Christie has lifted the mandatory evacuation order and travel ban for several barrier island communities.

On Absecon Island, you are allowed to return to Margate, Longport and Brigantine, but there is a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew. You are not allowed to return to Atlantic City and Ventnor.

In Cape May County, you are allowed to return to several shore towns. They include Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, North Wildwood, West Wildwood, Avalon, Stone Harbor, Ocean City and Sea Isle City, which was where FOX 29's Steve Keeley was reporting from Friday morning.

Some people are frustrated with not being able to get back into towns like Ventnor and Atlantic City to check on their homes.

"I was the first to tell you about the curfew in Atlantic City, and I tweeted they're worried about looting. And everybody thought that was funny," Keeley said. "Well, they've got looters up the wazoo right now, in [Atlantic City police Capt.] Frank Brennan's words. They caught three guys who ripped off a mini-market. They loaded up this car, and they caught them – it's easy to spot them when you have a curfew because they're not supposed to be out on the street if they don't have lights or sirens with these cars."

Keeley added, "They're catching these looters one after the other in Atlantic City."

Officials aren't just being careful because of looting. They've also got problems with the sewage treatment and water in some towns, as well, Keeley added.

"So, think about it. They're trying to get Atlantic City open as fast as possible," Keeley said. "This is day No. 6 those casinos are shut down, and they're losing millions. And a lot of people are losing a lot less than millions but losing their livelihoods – say all the cocktail waitresses, the bartenders, the dealers. … Everybody is suffering. Everybody wants these places open as soon as possible. But those are some of the reasons why they're not being opened."
