Ever since Superstorm Sandy devastated parts of the Jersey shore last October, officials have planned for a new system of protective sand dunes along the entirety of the 127-mile coast.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Dozens of Connecticut National Guard troops are removing debris and helping police departments with security patrols along the state's shoreline in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy.
Col. John Whitford says about two dozen Guardsmen are removing storm debris in Greenwich and about 100 are helping Bridgeport police patrol the downtown area and neighborhoods with power outages. Another nine troops are providing security in East Haven's Cosey Beach area, where several homes were damaged by flooding.
Whitford says part of the security missions is to deter looting. He says there have been a few reports of looting in Bridgeport.
The Guard is also manning a food and water distribution center to supply shelters in East Hartford, and providing power generators to Ridgefield.
More than 1,000 Guard troops are deployed.
