Firefighters battle LI sewage plant fire

Posted: Updated:

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) - Firefighters are battling a fire at a sewage treatment plant on Long Island.

The blaze started around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Bay Park sewage treatment plant in the Nassau County village of East Rockaway.

Officials say at least six fire departments are on the scene.

According to Newsday, it wasn't immediately clear if it was related to the storm, which damaged the plant. The damage has left residents in the southern half of Nassau without the ability to flush their toilets.

Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano on Tuesday issued a conserve water order to residents affected by the plant.
