Some Rode Out Storm In Attics In Seaside Heights

Posted: Updated:
SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. -

The entire coast of New Jersey was affected by Hurricane Sandy's wrath, but Seaside Heights took a real beating.

FOX's Dan Bowens reported that the situation is beginning to turn desperate, in some cases. Shortly before he went on air, a man with a flashlight came up to him and his photographer and asked if they had some water because he hadn't been able to flush his toilet for a few days.

Power is out there, like it is for about 2 million New Jersey citizens.

Waters rose to 8 to 10 feet above flood stage there when Sandy made landfall about 45 miles to the south in Atlantic City.

"There were hundreds of residents who thought they could ride out the storm who were wrong," Bowens reported. "They were trapped inside their homes. The water was up to the second floor of their homes. We've talked to people who hid in their attics, waiting for emergency officials, desperate to try and get out of their homes."

Seaside Heights Volunteer Fire Dept. members and Ocean County emergency management officials say they were going door to door in those high-water military vehicles. They were wearing dive gear, swimming up to the houses and pulling people out.

They'd bring the rescues back to the firehouse, load them up on vehicles and take them across the bridge.

There are only two ways on and off the barrier peninsula of Seaside Heights. The bay and ocean have met, submerging the streets and flooding homes. One bridge remains inaccessible. The other bridge was struck by a house that became dislodged from its foundation and got caught in the floodwaters.

The Ocean County Emergency Operations Center has sent out an email saying that there are several intact houses that are now floating in the bay.

The iconic Funtown Pier was destroyed, washed away by Sandy.

Bowens has more details in this video report.
