Benefit set for Good Samaritan who lost leg helping motorist - DC Breaking Local News Weather Sports FOX 5 WTTG

A man who lost his leg while trying to help a stranded motorist has an uplifting take on all that he's been through in the last 14 months.

Caleb Graves lost his leg and nearly died after being struck by a drunk driver at a Norcross intersection. Graves had stopped to help a stranded motorist.

The 23-year-old says he and his fiancé were leaving church last year when the tragedy occurred.  He says knowing everything he knows now, he would still stop to help.

"Things could have been done better. I should have maybe not acted too hastily on the scene. But, I do realize even being contact with the driver that I helped, it was life-changing for the good -- even though it was so traumatic," said Graves.

Caleb said that one of the best parts of this year was getting married in February.

"Even though I've lost my leg I feel like I've gained so much in my heart and in my faith. What the Lord's given me, apart from losing my leg. I don't regret it because I feel like I'm stronger now," said Graves.

Friends like Tiffany Flock say watching Caleb walk through this has been life-changing.

"To come out of it smiling and loving the guy who hit him and all of that stuff, it was the most incredible thing to see," said Flock.

The driver who hit graves didn't have insurance. Graves' insurance pays the minimum, so now they're planning a benefit to raise money for Caleb's medical trust fund.

"Our hope is to get Caleb $10,000 -- at least -- to go into his medical trust fund to help pay his bills. Ultimately, I would love to raise...$25,000 or more to get a running leg. He says he dreams about running and so I'd love to see him run," said Flock.

Graves says he now has a friendship with the man he was helping that day and hopes to talk with the man who hit him.
