A northern New Jersey police officer suffered severe spinal injuries when a large tree crashed on his police cruiser shortly after he responded to an emergency during the superstorm.
Wayne Police Chief John Reardon told The Record of Woodland Park that the injured officer had responded to a ruptured gas line call on Monday. He was in his cruiser when the tree came down, dragging down power lines, and it took emergency crews more than an hour to remove the officer from the vehicle due to the tangle of wires and tree limbs.
The officer, whose name was not disclosed, underwent more than six hours of surgery on Tuesday. He is expected to survive, but further details on his condition were not disclosed.
