An army of volunteers is hitting the streets of Detroit, keeping their eyes open for suspicious activity.

Javan Merriweather and Jamie Warfield along with other members of the Motor City Blight busters are taking part in this year's patrols. Under the command of organization founder John George they are working to keep the Old Redford neighborhood arson free. And while the weather may have caused a lighter than usual turnout in Angels' Night patrols last night, it also worked in the volunteers' favor.

"It was wet, it was cold, it was breezy. Most people were in the house, hopefully looking out the window with their lights on. But tonight I think it's going to be a carbon copy. And that's good on Angels' Night, " George said.

The volunteer effort is designed to prevent a repeat of the Devil's Night fires of the past that, in 1984 for example, burned more than 800 buildings in Detroit.

But groups like the Motor City Blight Busters and the rest of the Angels' Night volunteers are working to change the stigma haunting the holiday.

'It was a very dark time, a very scary time. And that's the think we want to get away from," George said.

And the effort is working, last year the number of fires reported on Halloween and the two days prior totaled 94, compared with 169 during the 3-day period in 2010.

An emergency curfew is also being enforced requiring anyone age 17 or younger to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
