Hundreds of evacuations at NYU Tisch Hospital

MYFOXNY.COM -

Three hundred patients from NYU Langone Medical Center were transfered to nearby hospitals after a backup generator failed following a power outage in Manhattan Monday evening.

The outage was the result of strong winds and heavy rain from Hurricane Sandy, according to Mayor Mike Bloomberg.

"We worked closely with the FDNY, NYPD, Office of Emergency Management, and accepting hospitals throughout this process and thank them for their immediate assistance," said hospital officials.

The transfer of patients from the adult critical unit, neo-natal intensive unit, pediatric critical care unit and obstetrics continued through Tuesday and was completed by 11 a.m.

The AP reported that some of the patients were being treated for cancer. Staff and rescuers had to carry patients down the stairs because the elevators weren't working in the outage.

Patients were being moved to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Mount Sinai.
