Potomac River flooding expected after storm - DC Breaking Local News Weather Sports FOX 5 WTTG

The National Weather Service says the Potomac River is likely to experience its worst floods in 16 years in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

According to a forecast Monday evening, the river is expected to start flooding Tuesday night. The weather service says the flooding will along the river will be the worst since a tropical system in 1996.

The flooding is expected between Hancock, Md., and Washington and is expected to last through the end of the week.

Meteorologist Kevin Witt says businesses in the Georgetown neighborhood will likely be affected by the flooding, but he says he doesn't envision "too much of a threat" to the National Mall. Still, he says the flood could be among the five worst in history for the Potomac.
