PHILADELPHIA -

The early impacts of Hurricane Sandy prompted officials with the School District of Philadelphia to cancel classes for Tuesday.

The Tuesday closure includes all early childhood and after school programs.

The school district says it will provide updated information on its hotline: 215-400-INFO.

City officials have also decided to close all city offices Tuesday as well.

Hurricane Sandy was expected to reach the Philadelphia area Monday evening.

"This is not a time for us to be out pretty much doing anything, let alone going to work," Mayor Michael Nutter said during a Monday afternoon briefing.

SEPTA and PATCO have announced service suspensions through Tuesday, while Amtrak also announced service along its Northeast Corridor line was canceled Tuesday.
