A Montgomery County firefighter is involved in a very different kind of battle tonight--a fight to recover from a double shooting that claimed the life of his wife.
The couple was shot multiple times while walking their dog on a footpath near Fur Seal Court in Waldorf Friday night.
A huge manhunt is now underway for the killer.
Detectives from the Charles County Sheriff's office were at every entrance to the Hampshire neighborhood--handing out fliers about the murder and searching for clues.
Neighbors say the couple was friendly to everyone, which makes the ambush even more of a mystery.
"He's a fireman, she's a nurse. They help other people not just themselves. They have beautiful children. I walk the same path, "Neighbor Brian Grant says.
Someone put a bible at the entrance to the footpath where the couple was ambushed by a lone gunman while walking their dog just after dusk.
A fitting tribute to the couple who recently married--and were raising four young children together.
"They moved here two years ago. It was a new beginning. Wonderful kids. God loving people," Ed Hernandez says.
Neighbors say the couple's children have been taken to New York while their stepfather recovers. Family members say he hasn't yet been told that his wife died in the ambush.
Detectives say every tip they get will be taken seriously, and there's a $5,000 reward for information that helps police catch the killer.
Right now, a firm motive hasn't been established.
"We think the answer rests within the community. We hope someone will give us a call," Diane Richardson of the Charles County Police Department says.
