Residents of Long Island's Fire Island are under an evacuation order as Sandy approaches from the south.

Suffolk County's Fire Rescue and Emergency Services reports that everyone occupying Fire Island must be evacuated by 2 p.m. Sunday.

A Code Red warning notification was sent out to residents on Saturday morning.

A spokesman for the Ocean Beach Fire Department told the Long Island Press that once the evacuation is complete, Long Island Power Authority may cut off electricity Fire Island.

Fire Island has many thousands of residents during the summer, but this time of the year the 32-mile-long barrier island is mostly empty.

Between 200 and 300 people live there year-round.

Officials ordered flood-prone areas on both the north and south shores of Long Island to evacuate Saturday.

"We are asking everyone to take the time, secure their homes, and then get off Fire Island well in advance of this storm and the potential destruction it may bring," Islip Town Supervisor Phil Nolan said.

Once the evacuation is complete the Long Island Power Authority may cut off electricity to Fire Island and it would also limit the availability of water.

The department is moving some of its fire equipment off-island in preparation.
