Counties set to open more early voting sites

Posted: Updated:
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

The number of early voters in Georgia continues to grow. SkyFOX 5 found voters in Gwinnett County waiting in a one-hour line. Gwinnett and other counties will soon open more voting sites.

Several voters waiting in line said they wanted to be sure to cast their ballot this year.

"We all talked about 2008 election being pivotal and important in our history. I think that this election couldn't any more important," said Chirag Patel.

The main election office on Grayson Highway is the only early voting site in Gwinnett.

"We're actually voting between1,600 to 2,000 people a day. Now that's in-person. That's in addition to probably 7 or 800 that we're issuing by mail daily," said Gwinnett Elections Director Lynn Ledford.

Ledford said the decision to open one location allowed the county to put more resources into managing the growing use of mail-in ballots.

Beginning Saturday, Gwinnett will open four satellite locations in addition to the main office in Lawrenceville.

Early voters said that the  presidential debates did not change their vote, but they watched the debates closely.

They haven't been a factor in my deciding on a candidate, but it certainly has helped me look at some of the issues and really think them through without having to listen to the spin afterwards," said Sherrie Zebrasky.

All of Gwinnett's satellite locations and the main election office will be open for the final week before Election Day.

Early voting ends at 5 p.m. in Gwinnett this week, but the county says those people in line at that time will be allowed to cast their ballot.

Any registered voter can take advantage of early voting in Georgia. Voters need to make sure to have a government issued ID, like a passport or driver's license. Hours and locations for advance voting will vary from county-to-county.
