School bus driver accused of impaired driving and crashing bus

Police on Long Island arrested a bus driver for allegedly driving while his ability was impaired and crashing his bus during a field trip in Cold Spring Harbor, authorities said.

James Sommer, 47, of Massapequa, was driving a school bus carrying 29 Plainedge Middle School seventh graders and a teacher Monday morning.

When he tried to park the bus, he backed into a tree limb, police said. A 12-year-old girl suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment, Suffolk County Police said.

Authorities charged Sommer with driving while ability impaired.

Sommer will be held overnight and is set for arraignment on Tuesday in Central Islip.

Police impounded the school bus.
