Phoenixville Area Schools Drop Halloween From Classroom

Posted: Updated:
CHESTER COUNTY, Pa. -

Mid October normally means frightening displays and Halloween costumes, but in Chester County the Pheonixville Area School District has decided to drop the "Halloween" part of the season this year.

The Phoenixville School Board decided to skip Halloween this year and instead make it a fall festival at school.

Superintendent Dr. Alan Fegley tells Fox 29's John Anderson that the principals of the elementary schools decided to create a unified celebration of fall.

District officials say they notified parents back in August in their welcome back newsletter of the fall celebrations. In the newsletter, the district said parties would be a part of the fall celebration, just not costumes and parades.

Outside the Kindergarten Center, there is a Halloween display, but there won't be one inside.

On October 30th and 31st, the fall festival at the Kindergarten Center will include learning activities that involve things associated with fall.

The principal says she has not received any complaints from parents about the change.

But others in the community say dropping Halloween is going too far.

Halloween has been dropped in other school districts because of religious connotations and attendance drops.

In Phoenixville, the kids can still celebrate Halloween, just not in the elementary schools.
