Gap Pulls 'Manifest Destiny' T-Shirt Off Its Racks

Posted: Updated:

Gap has pulled a controversial T-shirt off its racks because of a public outrage on social media sites.

The shirt simply says "Manifest Destiny."

Adding fuel to the fire, the shirt's designer, Mark McNairy, tweeted, "Manifest destiny. Survival of the fittest," in response to the complaints.

He quickly deleted his tweet, but not before it was widely circulated.

He followed up with an apology tweet explaining his interpretation of the historic term.

"Manifest Destiny" actually refers to the mid-19th century mindset that white Americans had a divine obligation to claim as much of the continent as possible for themselves.
