TINICUM TWP., Pa. -

Friends and neighbors of a pilot killed in a helicopter crash in Bucks County Wednesday believe he was trying to protect his neighbors in the final moments of his life.

The pilot, Douglas Ward Brigham, was a retired Pennsylvania State Trooper and the great grandson of President Herbert Hoover.

Brigham's chopper went down Wednesday morning in a wooded area with some homes nearby near Uhlerstown Hill Road and Everbreeze Drive in Tinicum Township.

The helicopter was destroyed on impact.

Fox 29's Claudia Gomez reports a state police lieutenant believes Brigham noticed that something was wrong with his helicopter and to avoid hitting anyone he aimed to land in an area off trees.

The first responders on the scene of the crash were Brigham's own friends at the Delaware Valley Volunteer Fire Company where he volunteered over the last four years.

By Wednesday afternoon, the Federal Aviation Administration had arrived on scene to handle the investigation. It could be some time before investigators determine exactly what happened.
