High winds knock out power to thousands in SE Mich.

DETROIT (WJBK) -

It was a rough start to the work week for many Flat Rock residents. Thousands woke up in the dark after high winds knocked out power overnight.

"I showered in the dark, didn't blow dry my hair," said Maureen Fater, who lost power at her home. "I guess you do what you got to do."

Nearly a quarter of the city's 9,800 citizens were off the grid Monday, including city hall. DTE crews were on the job making repairs. But until then, the generators were humming. "We understand from DTE, the wind and storm took down some power lines," said Flat Rock Mayor Jonathan Dropiewski.

A Flat Rock Community High School, the parking lot was empty. The entire school district, roughly 2,000 students, had the day off due to the widespread power problem.

DTE is telling residents their lights should be back on by 10 p.m. Monday.

Thousands of others are without power as well around southeast Michigan.
