National Kidney Foundation of Michigan, Free Health Screenings

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT, MI - The National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM) has partnered up with Gift of Life MOTTEP to provide free health screenings in northwest Detroit.

Screenings will be offered from 10:00am to 6:00pm on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at the Northwest Activities Center, located at 18100 Meyer Road. All Detroit-area residents are encouraged to attend.

Screenings will be available for high blood pressure, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. African Americans are at an increased risk for hypertension and diabetes.

Together, hypertension and diabetes cause over 70% of all kidney failure cases in Michigan. When diabetes and hypertension are properly controlled with a healthy lifestyle, a majority of kidney disease and kidney failure cases can be prevented or delayed. Approximately 80,000 people in Detroit have chronic kidney disease, and most don't know it.

It's important for Detroiters to know their risk for diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease in order to live quality, healthy lives and avoid future life-threatening health concerns.

For information about the health screenings, please call 313-259-1574, or visit www.nkfm.org.
