Candidate Bio: Wanda Rohl - 16th District

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Wanda Rohl is running to represent Illinois' 16th congressional district in the U.S. House. She promises to bring a strong work ethic to Congress, and to protect the needs of her constituents.

An ATV accident left her a T-6 paraplegic, but she says federal rehabilitation, disability, healthcare and service learning programs gave her the tools and resources to rebuild her life.

Rohl said she plans to fight for quality public education, women's rights, affordable healthcare, and sustainable energy technology. She says doing so will help make citizens more capable of being productive and supporting themselves, which will stabilize the economy.

She is running against Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger.

The first-term congressman is the incumbent for the 11th district, but decided to run for the 16th due to redistricting in 2011. The Deputy Republican Whip defeated incumbent Rep. Don Manzullo in an ugly primary battle for the GOP candidacy on March 20, 2012. Manzullo has served District 16 for the last 20 years.

Illinois' 16th district includes all of Boone, Bureau, Grundy, Iroquois, LaSalle, Lee, Livingston, Ogle, Putnam counties and parts of DeKalb, Ford, Stark, Will and Winnebago counties.

On The Issues

Social Safety Net - I believe passionately in maintaining strong social safety net so they remain available for all Americans if the need arises. Contrary to what many would have us believe, those who rely on these programs do so through desperation and not a desire to avoid responsibilities. I know from my own personal experience that these programs can not only save families from homelessness but literally save lives. Without the safety net programs my family and thousands of other families would not survive. Read more...

Buy American - "It is better for Americans to purchase from Americans, even if the things purchased cost more. If we purchase a ton of steel rails from England for twenty dollars, then we have the rails and England the money. But if we buy a ton of steel rails from an American for twenty-five dollars, then America has both the rails and the money." Read more...

Public Education: A Centerpiece for our History - We're experiencing the worst attack on public education in American history, as moneyed forces who seek to privatize education for profit fund candidates who demonize educators. The future of our nation depends upon having a well-educated population, not simply a well-educated upper class. Public education, an equal education for every citizen, is one of our country's greatest inventions. Read more...

Military and Veterans - For more than two centuries, the freedoms we enjoy as Americans have been protected by our military. We owe a great debt to those who won our independence, kept our nation whole and for most of the 20th century protected democracy around the world. And we owe a special debt to the brave men and women of our all-volunteer military, and to their families, who despite the controversies surrounding our recent conflicts have heeded our country's call. Campaign Financing - Money corrupts the political process. It is a fact of political life that money is necessary to get the message out to the people. The problem isn't so much the money but the hold that money has on candidates and elected officials. When the average citizen donates $30 to a campaign or political party that money helps get that candidate's or party's message across in various media forms. That's people getting involved in selecting their government. That's democracy at work. Read more...

Jobs and the Importance of Strong Unions - Our jobs provide each of us with a sense of pride. We identify ourselves by our work; our jobs are who we are. We are a nation founded on the principle that hard work will be rewarded. But when despite our hard work jobs are outsourced to other countries, simply to fatten the corporate bottom line, it's not only a crisis for individual workers; it's a crisis for our entire country. Healthcare - We will move this country forward on expanding health care access by focusing first and foremost on jobs! I will make it one of my highest priorities to get Americans back to work with good paying jobs with strong benefits that include quality health care coverage. Continuing to ignore the plight of the unemployed and underemployed by holding votes to repeal the ACA wastes valuable time and taxpayer dollars and loses sight of the realities of what middle and working class Americans need in their lives right now. Energy Policy - We have reached a point in our country's history when our dependence on oil, coal, and other limited sources of energy is now a matter of national security. Until we become energy independent our freedom is in danger. Read more...

Return Sanity to the Financial Industry: Reinstate Glass-Steagall - In recent weeks, one of America's largest banking behemoths lost $2 billion dollars in a single day – That's billion with a "B." The bank's CEO chalked it up to a glitch that didn't appreciably impact the bank. Shortly thereafter, he was given a raise and pat on the back by bank shareholders. Read more...

Family Farming - Too many Americans believe that their food comes from the grocery store. However, smaller family run farms provide more resources and food products that most people think. As someone who was raised on a working farm, I understand what it is to be part of a family business. My sisters and I worked the farm when we were younger, as have my two sons. Family farming is more than just a business, though, it's a way of life that is a vital to how we define ourselves in our community. Read more...
