A four-year-old boy is lucky to be alive Thursday after falling out of a 9th-floor apartment window.
It happened at the Park Montgomery Apartments complex in Silver Spring.
Police say the screen on the window gave way, sending the boy tumbling some 90 feet to the ground. Instead of slamming into the industrial size air conditioning units below, a tree broke his fall.
A woman walking by saw the child under the tree and rushed to help.
"I saw the child lying there, and no one was around him, so I ran to him," Aretha Saw says. "He was crying."
A neighbor called 911 and the little boy was rushed to a local trauma center with serious injuries.
Incredibly, police say he was conscious and talking, and even asked when he could go home.
Before that happens, investigators have some questions for his mother. Was anyone watching him or was he home alone?
Annie Washington says she knows the mother needed daycare.
"About two nights ago, she asked me if I could watch the child while she works, and she never got back to me," says Washington. "Was he home alone today? I don't know."
Washington, who has lived in the building for 22 years, says this accident is a wake-up call.
"Kids are very inquisitive," says Washington. "They want to touch everything, see everything, try everything. You have to watch children."
Detectives from the Family Crimes Division and Child Protective Services are in charge of this case.
So far, no one has been charged.
