ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
George Zimmerman's defense team on Thursday filed a motion which asks for all records held by leading state and federal agencies that reviewed the Sanford Police Department's handling of the initial investigation into the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
The Demand for Specific Discovery motion requests discovery evidence held by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Department of Justice Community Relations Services as they pertain to the organizations' respective investigations and communications in the case.
In motions made public Monday, Zimmerman's defense said they expect to take between 50 and 75 depositions, and more time is needed to review all of the prosecution's evidence. Attorney Mark O'Mara asked for a delay in his client's murder trial and has also asked a judge to allow Martin's school records to be subpoenaed, as well as information from his Twitter and Facebook accounts.
Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Martin last February in a gated community in Sanford. He is pleading not guilty, claiming self-defense.
