26-year old Matthew Sofka left Central Detectives Monday evening lagging behind a lawyer and heavily guarded by his father. His father threw a shirt and jacket over Matthew's face, likely the what he wore the night of the post wedding disaster.
"He's never been in trouble in his life so after all the evidence is going to come out we're sure he's going to be exonerated," said Pasquale Colavita, Sofka's lawyer. Sofka is one of three people to be charged so far after a reception at the Society Hill Sheraton early Sunday morning where parties from two separate receptions clashed. Sofka is charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and riot.
District Attorney Seth Williams says there was a lot going on. He commented on the jaw dropping video which shows wedding guests hitting police trying to gain control and police hitting people with batons. The video also shows a bride running outside to check on her uncle who ultimately died of a heart attack during it all.
"It was a very unfortunate melee. It should have been a time for people to celebrate at a wedding reception," said D.A. Seth Williams.
A 15-year old in town sight-seeing with family was staying at the hotel. He heard the commotion and recorded everything on his cell phone. The District Attorney says he's reviewing it to see if there was excessive force used or not and to see who are the appropriate people to be charged.
