WASHINGTON -
Could you feed yourself on $30 a week?
D.C. Councilmember Mary Cheh is attempting to do it as she takes part in the SNAP/Food Stamp Challenge. Cheh and others who participate in the challenge this week will have to feed themselves for seven days with only $30.
The challenge is set up to bring attention to those who depend on assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP currently helps more than 140,000 D.C. residents put food on the table.
Cheh spent almost an hour shopping for food items that were less expensive and could be used to create several meals. Cheh admits that she had to leave out some of the items she typically tosses in her shopping cart. There wasn't enough money for her to purchase fresh flowers, raisin bread and her favorite blueberries.
