2 people are dead and 3 more are injured following a shooting Saturday night in Camden.
All five victims were sitting in a burgundy Chevrolet Lumina parked on Hull Road in the Fairview neighborhood about 11:40 p.m. Saturday night when a masked man walked up to the car, got in the driver's side of the car and fired into it repeatedly.
On Sunday, family members of the victims gathered outside of Cooper Hospital grieving. Khalil Gibson, 20 and Jewel Manire, 18 were killed instantly.
A 16-year-old female was critically injured with a gunshot wound to the head. A 20-year-old female from Camden was shot in the face and another 16-year-old female from Camden was shot in the arm and shoulder. She was able to get out of the vehicle and call 9-1-1. Neighbors say the violence in the city is getting out of hand.
"Killing kids, killing kids, grown ups killing kids. It's just crazy" said John Carter of Camden.
The deaths mark a grim milestone for Camden. The 49th and 50th homicides of the year putting the city on pace to shatter it's homicide record of 58 set in 1995. It may be just a number but for teenagers walking the streets of the city--it's reality.
"I am afraid. Because I don't know if I can get shot and killed. How often do you think of that? every day I walk out the door" said 14 year old Ricardo Santiago of Camden.
"My kids are safe. I pray for them I have to put it in the lord's hands. But ain't no changes are going to happen unless there are real changes" said Sierra Jackson mother of 5 children.
Those changes may be on the way next month when Camden disbands it's entire police department. 270 officers will be given pink slips to free up money for a larger 400 officer non union county wide metro police force. Some say crime is so bad here--the wonder new police will even help.
"To me it's scary walking the streets. Anybody can just take you or just shoot you for no reason" said Session Gonzalez.
Camden Police are looking for the gunman of Saturday's shooting described only as a Hispanic male about 6 feet tall.
Anyone with information on this person's identity is urged to contact Camden County Prosecutor's Office Investigator John Hunsinger at (856) 365-3239 or Camden Police Detective Shawn Donlon at (856) 757-7420. Information may also be emailed to ccpotips@ccprosecutor.org.
