A 27-year-old Virginia state trooper has died after he was hit by an SUV while on special assignment directing traffic for the State Fair of Virginia.
State police say Andrew D. Fox was run down late Friday on Route 30 in Hanover County. Fox was wearing a traffic safety vest when he was struck. No charges have been filed against the driver of the SUV but an investigation is continuing.
The state police superintendent, Col. W. Steven Flaherty, called Fox highly regarded and his death a "tremendous loss." He was the 58th state police officer killed in the line of duty in its 80-year history.
Fox was assigned to Pulaski County. He was Tazewell County native and served on the town of Tazewell force. He was a Virginia Tech graduate.
