Cops on Long Island saved a man from an apparent heroin overdose and then arrested him Friday, authorities said.

Officers with the Suffolk County Police Department responded to a 911 call from a home on Patchogue Avenue in Mastic at about 2 p.m. They found an incoherent 18-year-old man in the backyard with shallow breathing and a weak pulse, police said.

The officers sprayed Narcan, a medication that can reverse the effects of a narcotic overdose, into the man's nose, helping to revive him.

Medics rushed him to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center for treatment.

Authorities then charged the man with possession of a hypodermic instrument and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Suffolk County Police recently began participating in state pilot program in which officers carry and use Narcan for just such incidents, authorities said.
