Candelario Guevara-Guzman (Montgomery County Police Department)
SILVER SPRING, Md. -
A 72-year-old man is in critical condition after a vicious beating outside a Silver Spring apartment complex.
It happened on Garland Avenue at Piney Branch sometime late Monday night or very early on Tuesday.
Candelario Guevara-Guzman's two sons found him unconscious in the parking lot next to the dumpster at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
The tiny man, just 110 pounds, had left his home at 8 p.m. to go shopping and never made it back.
He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after a vicious beating.
Police think robbery may have been the motive.
"He's a 72 year old man," the victim's daughter Ellsy Ventura said through tears. "The way they left him is inhuman."
Montgomery County Police were back at the scene Wednesday, handing out flyers in Spanish and English.
Crime Solvers is offering a $1,000 reward for information in the assault.
"We believe it occurred right here by the dumpster and that someone may have seen something," says Captain Paul Starks of Montgomery County Police. "No matter how small the information may be, we want to hear it."
The attack happened from just a two minute walk from Guevara-Guzman's home. Family members say people living around here know him well. He would help anyone who needed it. Now they hope neighbors will help him.
"He has been living here seven years," daughter Ruth Guevara says of her dad. "Come forward and help us out."
And while police search for his attackers, family members are praying for a miracle so Guevara-Guzman can be reunited with his second wife and young son in El Salvador.
"Hoping he's going to make it, but I don't know how," Ventura says.
