WASHINGTON -

A D.C. dog owner is in custody after stabbing the dog several times.

Investigators say the owner is known to suffer from mental illness and attacked the dog with a four- inch knife during what police call a domestic violence incident.

The Shih Tzu was stabbed seven times. Three of those wounds were severe.

The dog, named Coco, is recovering now and is living with a foster family.

The person who attacked her has been taken into custody for psychological evaluation.

The Washington Area Humane Society is taking donations to pay for Coco's care.
