Philly Mobster Sentenced To 33 Months In Prison

PHILADELPHIA -

A member of the Philadelphia La Cosa Nostra Family was sentenced Monday to more than two years in prison in connection to a loan sharking and illegal gambling case, prosecutors said Monday.

United States Attorney Zane David Memeger announced that 48-year-old Louis Barretta was also ordered to pay a $7,500 fine and serve three years of supervised release.

At the time of his plea, Barretta admitted he made loans with exorbitant interest rates and collected payments on the loans by using extortionate means, the Department of Justice said. Barretta pleaded guilty in September.

Investigators say he is among 14 members and associates of the local mob who are charged with crimes involving racketeering conspiracy, extortion, loan sharking and witness tampering.

The Department of Justice says the defendants were also charged in connection with a theft from an employee benefit plan in a third superseding indictment that was returned by a federal grand jury in Philadelphia in July.

Investigators say that indictment also included alleged crime family boss Joseph Ligambi and underboss Joseph Massimino, among others.
