McLEAN, Va. -

Fairfax County Police call him the office creeper--a man who disguises himself as a maintenance worker and swipes wallets and purses.

He's been at it for several weeks now, targeting medical buildings in Falls Church and McLean.

The man's scheme is pretty simple, blend in and strike. So far it's happened seven times since late June.

Investigators say he's been slipping into doctors' offices where the unsuspecting employees and patients may think he's employed by the building.

He even carries a clip board.

"It's quite brazen. The person is wearing dark blue work pants, a blue shirt and a neon green vest", says Lucy Caldwell with Fairfax County Police.

Investigators say the man's favorite targets are medical buildings in the 8500 block of Arlington Boulevard and the 8100 block of Leesburg Pike.

"Some of the people have been patients where they put their things in the cubby holes, their clothes and other belongings", says Caldwell, "and when they come back its gone, in other situations it's been perhaps a receptionist or an office worker who stepped out momentarily".

Some people who patronize the buildings were not surprised to learn of the scheme noting the economic times.

"He must be knowledgeable about the medical community and patients and know how people react when you have a lot of things on your mind", said Liz Pederson, "you bring in a child who's sick or you're sick and it's disconcerting that someone would take advantage of that".

Police say after the man leaves with what he's stolen he uses the credit cards at gas stations in Virginia and the District.

"You know, a maintenance person is just so normal in any building", said Kevin Koster, "you don't even think twice or look twice at anybody, he's got a good scam going".

Police say the man plays the part right down to looking at vents and acting as if he is on a maintenance call.
