The Philadelphia Fire Department is pushing for more fire prevention safety and awareness in the form of a new smart phone app.

The fire department, alongside members of Drexel University's Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design unveiled the new "Philadelphia Fire Department Safety App" Thursday on the Drexel campus.

Developers say the app gives users instant access to fire prevention and safety information, including smoke alarms, home escape planning, hospital locations, first aid tips and other useful pieces of information.

The app is optimized for IOS and will run on Android platforms, according to developers.

"This app will give us an opportunity to impart critical information on a  multitude of safety objects via a popular medium used by thousands of Philadelphians every day," Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said in a statement.

"We will gain access to segments of the population that we might not ordinarily come into contact with on a regular basis."

The fire department says the new app is part of a partnership between the fire department, Drexel's Department of public Safety and its college of media and design.

Drexel University seniors developed the app under the supervision of Digital Media, Web Development professors.
