COLMAR MANOR, Md. -

Prince George's County Police are searching for a suspect who attacked an elderly man with a baseball bat.

It has been six days since the assault and police still have no idea who they are looking for. The suspect is described by a witness as black or Hispanic with long hair, parted in the middle and carrying a silver aluminum baseball bat.

On Friday morning, police went back to the scene of the crime in hopes of collecting new leads.

Police say the attack occurred last Saturday morning at a bus stop in the 3800 block of Bladensburg Road in Colmar Manor at around 5:48 p.m. The 72-year-old victim suffered a vicious beating during an attempted robbery.

"It ended up causing some severe head trauma and breaking his arm," said Lt. Brad Pyle of Prince George's County Police. "The gentleman was lucky that a Good Samaritan was returning from church, saw the assault and screamed at the suspect. [The suspect] then ran off into the community."

Police spent part of the morning handing out fliers with the description of the man in hopes someone patronizing the shopping center or walking along Bladensburg Road might recognize him.

"I've been on the department for 17 years now and this just disgusts me," said Lt. Pyle. "It's just terrible. I've seen few things this horrible before."

Police say they have stepped up patrols in the area and have dedicated other resources in hopes of catching the man before he strikes again.

Police say the victim is still hospitalized and is doing better. He is now conscious and in stable condition.
