Detroit store owner: Trailer filled with goods towed without permission

No one likes getting towed, but a Detroit business owner says what a tow truck did was a crime. He told us the tow company stole a trailer filled with merchandise in broad daylight, then denied it. However, surveillance cameras were rolling.

"The name of my store, it's called Everything Different," said John Cromer.

His new store definitely lives up to its name, but it's what happened to the merchandise outside that's stealing all the attention.

Surveillance cameras captured the whole thing. A tow truck pulled into the Tower Center Marketplace parking lot just before 7:15 a.m. Tuesday. The video shows the driver pulling up to a tractor trailer and then towing it away. Cromer not only owns the store, he's the center's executive director, and he didn't call for a tow.

"Just in broad daylight, they didn't stop and talk to the manager, which was me and Miss Porter. They did not talk to our security guard. They didn't talk to our owners. They just came onto a personal, private parking lot and towed a semi trailer full of merchandise," Cromer said.

A quick look at the video leads straight to Goch and Sons Towing in southwest Detroit. The company wouldn't say anything to us, but Cromer said, "They told us that they received a phone call from someone, a name that is not familiar with us. It's not associated with us. They didn't verify this transaction. They just came on a call from anybody."

The shopping center's head of security said the driver gave police another story, claiming that he met someone there.

"An individual approximately six foot. He gave a vague description," said Dawan Thurmond.

However, video only shows one person in the parking lot -- the tow truck driver.

After a visit from Detroit Police, Goch and Sons returned the trailer, but Cromer said the trailer is not how he left it. He told us that a lock was busted off and it items were missing.

Now Cromer is demanding answers, and he won't stop until he gets some.

We tried repeatedly to get answers from Goch and Sons, but all they would tell us is no comment.

Meanwhile, Detroit Police have launched an investigation.
