Biofuels firm to build $60M plant in central Ga.

SANDERSVILLE, Ga. -

A California biofuels company is building a $60 million plant that will make wood pellets in central Georgia.

Gov. Nathan Deal announced Tuesday that General Biofuels Georgia plans to begin production in 2014. The plant will be based in Sandersville, 30 miles southeast of Milledgeville, and is slated to employ 35 workers.

The company, an offshoot of California-based General Biofuels, plans to produce 440,000 tons of wood pellets each year to a European utility that will use the pellets to generate electricity.

Officials say the pellets will be made from Georgia-grown timber and moved by rail to the Port of Savannah for shipping overseas.

Deal says the biofuels plant deal reflects his commitment to boosting manufacturing in Georgia.
