Are DC speed camera fines too high? Community meeting held to discuss issue

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Are speed camera fines in the District too high? It depends on who you ask.

The issue has been talked about a lot in recent weeks. A community meeting was held in Ward 7 on Monday night to discuss lowering the fines.

Speed camera fines range from $75 to $250 depending on how fast you are going.

Councilmembers Tommy Wells and Mary Cheh have started a discussion on camera fines.

Wells told residents at the community meeting that he believes the fines are too high.

"It should not be such a hardship. The purpose of fines is to improve behavior," Wells said.

But Hillcrest resident Gladys Gray has no sympathy for speeders.

"Give them a ticket. I beg for a camera. We are begging for more," said Gray.
