ARLINGTON, Va. -
Summer is officially over for students in Northern Virginia.
Tuesday is the first day of school in Arlington and Fairfax counties.
It's also the first year Arlington schools are enforcing their controversial new walking policy.
Elementary students who live within a mile of their school and middle and high school student who live within a mile and a half will have to walk to class.
School officials have also eliminated twelve bus stops in the area.
Many parents are against the change and hundreds have signed an online petition.
