Senior Colin Campbell is a Political Science and Broadcast Journalism major from New Ulm, Minnesota.
One of 30 American University students who traveled to New Hampshire last January to cover the state's first-in-the-nation primary, I worked with a team of three other students to help produce a mini-documentary examining the implication of the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision and the effects of super PACs during the GOP primary.
Intrigued by the interplay between media and politics, I'll be attuned to how the campaign reverberates in the media arena. Will the networks make the horse race or policy analysis their top priority? Does Buzzfeed assert itself as the emergent publication of this cycle, à la Politico in 2008? With a growing Latino voting block, will the campaigns utilize Univision and Telemundo to the same degree as the other news networks? And with a smorgasbord of unbiased news outlets offering up reliable reporting daily, does that mean voters will be more informed when they head to the polls on Nov. 6? Those are just some of the stories I'll be keeping an eye on as the candidates, and the press corps, hits the campaign trail this fall.
