Still spots for last-minute Labor Day weekend camping

Posted: Updated:
AFTON, Minn. (KMSP) -

Overnight camping in Minnesota has increased 18 percent in the past decade, and day visits have increased 19 percent.

With the last days of summer quickly approaching and school in-session or just around the corner, families are heading out for one last weekend trip. Joined by her neighbors from St. Paul, Tracey Smith says this is her family's fifth camping trip this summer.

"We started doing it a few years ago," she said. "We've done it more and more each summer."

Naturalist Linda Radimecky says her new position at Afton State Park came directly from high demand.

"We are offering a lot more programs with the legacy funding that was passed a few years ago," Radimecky said..

Even with the increase there is still time to get a campsite for Labor Day weekend. 30 percent of every park can't be reserved online, but in person on a first come first serve basis.

While there still is space available, the DNR recommends you call the park ahead of time before you show up in person.
