Gwinnett County police have released 911 recordings of a wrong-way accident. Investigators say Beverly Wilkins stole powerful narcotics from a hospital and injected them before she drove head-on into a car on Highway 316 on August 24.
According to the police report, 12 vials of the sedative propofol were found in Wilkins' purse when she was brought into the emergency room after the accident. The report said that Wilkins admitted to officers that she had stolen the narcotics from the hospital and injected them at a gas station before driving down Ga. 316 in the wrong direction.
Drivers called 911 to report Wilkins was in the wrong lane.
The medical staff at the Gwinnett Medical Center noticed that Wilkins had an IV inserted into the veins of her foot, according to the police report. Officers said that Wilkins' speech was slurred and that she had no memory of the accident.
Blood was drawn to determine if Wilkins was under the influence at the time of the accident, according to Cpl. Edwin Ritter of the Gwinnett County Police Department.
A spokesperson for the Gwinnett Medicine Center said that Wilkins does not work for the hospital. She works for an anesthesiology group that works out of the hospital, the spokesperson said.
Wilkins has been charged with DUI.
The driver of the car that Wilkins allegedly hit underwent surgery on Thursday, according to the victim's father. A passenger in that vehicle remains hospitalized in serious condition with a serious head injury.
