Drivers seek ways to minimize pain at the pump

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

If you drive in metro Atlanta, there's no escaping the high price of gas these days, but there are ways to cope.

Motorists lined up at Kroger on Moreland Avenue in Atlanta to take advantage of the grocery store's "Plus Card" savings.

Like thousands of shoppers, Caesar Broughton waited until the end of the month to cash in on his gas savings. That way his entire monthly grocery bill is applied to savings at the pump. For every $100 in groceries, he saves 10 cents a gallon through the plan.

Kate Brainerd, who fueled up at the Perimeter Costco, said that she uses the GasBuddy app to find the cheapest gas.

Some people said they try to avoid driving altogether.

"There's always the public transportation. MARTA's good on occasion, I just can't do it all the time," said Chris Cummus.

Apurva Parikh, who owns a dry cleaning business, said saving money on fuel is a big part of his bottom line.

"I try not to pass the cost to the customer, you've got to hold the bottom line as best as you can," said Parikh.

One answer for high gas prices is a hybrid. Ken Ramirez saves double because he has a hybrid and he takes advantage of Kroger's gas savings.

"It was like 15 to 20 bucks for the whole thing," said Ramire, who said he only has to fill up about once a month.

According to GasBuddy.com, some ways to save on fuel include:

•    Avoid High Speeds

•    Do Not Accelerate or Brake Hard

•    Keep Tires Properly Inflated

•    Use A/C Sparingly

•    Keep Windows Closed

•    Service Vehicle Regularly

•    Use Cruise Control

•    Avoid Heavy Loads

•    Avoid Long Idles

•    Purchase a Fuel Efficient Vehicle
