Dacula farm, community saves miniature horses

Posted: Updated:
DACULA, Ga. -

Two miniature horses, who faced certain death after their owners neglected them, now have new life. The two horses have been nursed back to health by Big Sky Farm in Dacula, and help from the community.

It's suspected the previous owners of the horses didn't groom or feed them for eight months.

The farm has more than two dozen horses, countless birds and one donkey.  Now they have added the two miniature horses, Tyson and Maybelline. Carla Brown, a Gwinnett County judge and owner of Big Sky Farm, learned about Tyson and Maybelline from a concerned friend.

When the farm received the horses, they were in pitiful shape, according to Brown.

"Maybelline was in a lot better shape but her back bone and her hip bone were protruding out. Tyson was laying down and was covered in just very, very, very thick hair," said Brown.

Tyson was laying down because he couldn't walk. Brown says he was grossly underweight, weighing only about 55 pounds.

"It just made me sick. Made me sick," said Brown.

If the horses were going to live, they would need around the clock care.

"For the first week, it was every three hours we were changing out an IV. He had a catheter, but you still had to flush the catheter, set up the IV, hook it up, get it running," said Brown.

Brown says she didn't have to go it alone. Volunteers from the community came out cared for the helpless horses.

After weeks of care, Maybelline is doing much better and Tyson is back on his feet.

Tyson is able to stand on his own, and he lays down when he needs to. He eats everything in sight. Both horses love to go outside and play.

"Things are rough in the world right now, and hard, but when you've got little guys like this that are in need, people just really, people tend to band together," said Brown.

As soon as Tyson and Maybelline are fully recovered, they will be adopted out. Meanwhile, the previous owners of the two minis, who owned them for about eight months, have been cited for neglect. The case is pending.

I think this is what many of us assume about outlet mall shopping -- we get rock bottom prices on everything from clothes to housewares on brand names that are either leftovers from last year or this year's overstock. Well, it's not quite like that.
