A metro Atlanta humane society is housing dogs evacuated from the coast of Florida due to concerns about flooding.
More than a dozen dogs were transported from Mexico Beach, Fla. to the Northeast Georgia Humane Society in Gainesville, Ga. on Monday.
"We've got 17 dogs and they came on one transport with a lot of barking, a lot of noise," said Rick Aiken.
The dogs had to be evacuated because of threats of flooding to the area where they're usually housed. Shelter volunteers said they're looking for some help with the added canines.
"We would love to have some folks come out during the next week or couple of days and help walk some of these dogs, so they can have time out of their kennels to exercise and socialization time with humans," said shelter worker Julie Edwards.
It's expected the dogs will be housed in Gainesville for the next week.
"What gets them is the tidal surge. Even though the hurricane looks like it's going to miss it, it's the tidal surge, the flooding," said Aiken.
The humane society in Gainesville says they're job is not to adopt them but keep them safe.
"They belong to the St. Joseph Bay Humane Society, so we cannot adopt them out. Our agreement was to just hold them. If somebody is really, really interested, I can try to find out that information," said Aiken. "It makes us feel real good we're able to help them -- we may need them one day."
