Mystery peacock hanging around Queens

MYFOXNY.COM -

More than two weeks ago, residents in one part of Queens began seeing a peacock on the loose. Fox 5 searched and found the bird again on Tuesday, but unfortunately, he can't tell us where he came from.

The Kew Gardens peacock was making his way through empty backyards. People came to us with pictures of the bird and stories of their sightings.

No one knows where the peacock came from. He has been quite successful at evading capture.

Neighbors said that on Sunday four police officers tried to trap him with plastic swimming pools. But he flew away. The NYPD said the officers tried to catch it for the safety of the bird.

We first spotted him on a roof. He was posing for kids in their backyard and photographers watching his every move. He went from yard to yard, jumping fences and ultimately flying to a roof where once again, he disappeared from sight.

The big question still remains: where is he from? Not from the nearby Queens Botanical Gardens, which said the bird is not theirs.

A spokesperson for the Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs most of the city's zoos (including the Queens Zoo), said no peafowl are missing.
