Verizon Communications Inc. says a train derailment near Baltimore is disrupting land-line service to customers, including some government clients.
Telecommunications problems Tuesday reached the U.S. Navy base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Lawyers preparing for hearings for five men charged in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks couldn't access information on government servers.
The connection was restored by early afternoon but the judge granted a defense request to start the hearings 24 hours to Thursday morning.
Verizon says the derailment in Ellicott City took out fiber-optic lines suspended along a railway bridge. Two people were killed when nearly two dozen cars on a CSX coal train derailed overnight. But Verizon could not confirm a connection to the Guantanamo outage and the train derailment.
