US Open qualifier matches under way in Queens

The US Open Qualifying Tournament kicked off in Flushing Meadows, Queens, Tuesday, featuring $1 million in prize money and 256 players vying for 32 slots in the main draw of the US Open.

The tournament is free and open to the public at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. You can also watch matches streaming live on USOpen.org. It runs through Friday, August 24.

Fans can watch the qualifying matches, check out some well-known players taking practice, and attend autograph sessions.

Concession stands are open during the Qualifying Tournament.

Several players who have competed in the Qualifying Tournament have then gone on to place well in the main US Open draw, including Anna Kournikova in 1996. Just 15 at the time, Kournikova reached the fourth round at the Open.
