ALEXANDRIA, Va. -
A Fairfax County police officer remains in the hospital following a terrible accident on Monday.
Authorities say a car crashed into the officer's cruiser head-on. It happened on Franconia Road in Alexandria. The driver of the other vehicle, a 2006 Infiniti, was killed, while the officer in the cruiser was unable to get out. Police have identified the driver of the Infiniti as 52-year-old Jeffrey M. Woods of Alexandria.
Richard Taylor was nearby when he heard the explosion. He rushed to the accident site to help. As he approached the police cruiser, the officer trapped inside told him to stay back. Taylor says the officer was trying to protect him from harm. Taylor and another young man ignored the police command and helped the trapped officer to safety.
Taylor says he doesn't know the identity of the other man who helped pull the officer from the car. He says the young man, who appeared to be a teenager, left the scene soon after the rescue.
