Fire at group home displaces special-needs residents

STAFFORD, Va. -

A fire has left special-needs adults out of a home in Stafford County.

The fire broke out around 4 p.m. on Monday in the 100 block of Whispering Pines Lane.

No one was home at the time, but firefighters were delayed because there are no fire hydrants near the home. Fire engines had to get the water from a rural supply on the main road more than a half-mile away.

"We're able to identify certain buildings within the county where we have to deploy longer hose loads, so the first arriving engine company was aware of that. They were able to position themselves appropriately and deploy their supply line, and then the second and third and fourth arriving engines were also able to do the same," said Battalion Chief Joe Grainger of the Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department.

The fire was contained in 40 minutes.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The residents of the home are now staying at other group homes nearby.
