WASHINGTON -

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says he has confidence in the head of Washington's airports authority, but not the board.

A recent audit found questionable spending and contracting by the board, which is overseeing construction of the $6 billion Metrorail extension to Washington Dulles International Airport. LaHood told The Washington Post that he has met with the governors of Virginia and Maryland and Washington's mayor to discuss changes to the board of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. The three elected officials appoint the 13 board members along with the authority's president.

The federal official said Friday that he has serious questions about how the board has operated, but supports former postmaster general John Potter, who took over as president and chief executive a year ago.
