Ferndale 'Green Cruise' encourages use of non-motorized transportation

Posted: Updated:

We love our cars in the Motor City, but there are cleaner, greener ways to get around.

Tom Dusky and Dave Cottrill are on mission to spread the word.  They're avid bikers and organizers of the Eighth Annual Green Cruise Saturday in Ferndale.

"The reason we have the Green Cruise is to encourage people to use their bicycles or walk or other forms of human transportation," said Dusky.  "Fortunately, I work at home, so I don't have to commute to work, but I do all my errands and chores and a lot of my exercise gets down while I'm cycling."

"For me it's fun, it's enjoyable.  You don't need to use a car all the time," Cottrill said.

That's the message of this earth friendly event that doesn't burn a drop of foreign oil.  People of all ages are welcome whether you ride all the time or you're just getting started.  There are several scenic bike routes to choose from or a 5K walk or you can just do some people watching from the sidewalk.

The event gets started at 8:00 a.m. on Nine Mile with a 40 mile bike ride to Detroit.  There's also a parade at noon, free food and drinks and green family fun.

"10:00 to 2:00 we have what we call our 'Green Alley'.  We have a children's area," Dusky said.

Last year, 600 to 800 people came out for the Green Cruise to be part of the solution to stop pollution.  If you want to join in the fun, just peddle, walk, roller blade, skateboard or use any non-motorized vehicle to Nine Mile west of Woodard.  Just remember leave the car at home.
